Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber (CSSMCW) is pleased to welcome Hugo Villanueva, MD, a fellowship-trained minimally invasive surgeon specializing in bariatric and foregut surgery, who will begin seeing patients in September. He provides comprehensive general surgical care with an emphasis on minimally invasive approaches. Joining Taesun Moon, DO, FACOS, FASMBS; Tameka Scott, DO; Robert J. Stoffa, MD; Jamie Hicks, CRNP; and Molly Vargo, CRNP in the WindberCare Surgical Associates & Bariatrics office at CSSMCW, he brings an impressive skill set in both laparoscopic and robotic techniques, contributing to our commitment to comprehensive and modern surgical care.
Dr. Villanueva’s expertise comes from a robust experience of over 1,000 procedures performed during his fellowship. His bariatric training alone comprises over 300 cases, including more than 200 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgeries. Furthermore, he has significant experience with lesser-known bariatric procedures such as BPD-DS (biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) and SADI-S (single-anastomosis duodeno-ileostomy with sleeve gastrectomy). His training also includes revisions and conversions of prior unsuccessful bariatric surgeries. Additionally, he has advanced endoscopic training, having performed hundreds of endoscopic procedures including dilation and stenting.
Dr. Villanueva’s extensive foregut training also allows him to provide comprehensive surgical care for esophageal reflux diseases, which include repair of hiatal hernias, fundoplications, and LINX procedures. His competence in minimally invasive methods also covers the insertion of enteral feeding tubes.
“I’m looking forward to bringing my advanced training in general, bariatric, and foregut surgery to Windber and the neighboring regions,” Dr. Villanueva expressed. “It gives me great pride to extend the benefits of a high-volume, nationally recognized program right to the local community. I am familiar with the area and I’m excited to be able to integrate myself in the community further and provide a valuable service.”
Dr. Villanueva earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. He completed his minimally invasive bariatric and foregut surgery fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center.
Bringing more than seven years of specialized training, Dr. Villanueva is poised to provide compassionate, comprehensive, and proficient treatment for his patients. To schedule an appointment, please contact WindberCare Surgical Associates & Bariatrics at 814-467-3653.
Dr. Villanueva resides in the Johnstown area and enjoys weight training, live music and festivals, and exploring new destinations through travel.
