Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber (CSSMCW) has received a five-star Overall Hospital Quality Star rating – the highest possible – from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This year, more than 4,500 Medicare-certified hospitals were ranked on their quality of care with five stars being the best.
As a five-star hospital, CSSMCW is one of only 22 hospitals in Pennsylvania and 455 hospitals nationally to achieve this highly sought-after rating. This places the hospital in the top 13% of hospitals in the nation.
At the latest Board of Directors meeting, CSSMCW Board Chairman Patrick Soon-Shiong said, “What an accomplishment! Please pass along my congratulations to leadership and the entire team at CSSMCW.”
The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating summarizes a variety of measures across seven areas of quality (mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging) into a single star rating that shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the U.S.
CSSMCW President Tom Kurtz said, “This ranking is a huge honor, and truly reflects the team effort and values of the medical center’s nurses, physicians, and staff. Simply stated, we care for our patients as individuals and it shows. Our staff strives to create and maintain these valuable relationships with our patients, our physicians, and our community.”
“These are not just numbers, they are a reflection of the focus we have on our patients. This is not a static measurement and we must continue with our efforts to maintain this tremendous rating,” Kurtz continued.
The most recent ratings, updated on April 28, 2021, are available on CMS’s Care Compare website, which provides consumers a health care comparison tool that can be used to help make informed decisions about their health care. The hospital encourages patients to use Care Compare as another tool in their healthcare provider selection process.
