In a patient's words...

“My husband Fred and I recently completed the 3-month Physician Exercise Program (PEP). We only have good things to say about PEP. We worked one-on-one with Lori and couldn’t have asked for someone more friendly and knowledgeable about the program. She was very encouraging. We met with Carol, a dietitian, who also was very knowledgeable and had valuable information for us to take home. By the end of the 3 months, [Fred’s] blood pressure decreased from 220 to 138. What an incredible difference and he is down about 13 pounds. I am a Type 2 diabetic and now exercising twice a week and the information obtained from Carol will benefit me. Fred and I just wanted you to know what a great program PEP is and we hope it stays around for others as we tell people about what a wonderful program it is.”

Thanks – Diane & Fred

Physician Exercise Program – P.E.P.

The link between a sedentary lifestyle and a variety of serious diseases has been proven beyond question. The HealthStyles PEP is designed to help participants make healthy lifestyle changes through a specially designed exercise program. You will be supervised by exercise physiologists and receive nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian. PEP is a three-month, self-pay program that is referred by you or your physician.

What is included in PEP?

  • Exercise physiologists who will help you incorporate changes in diet and exercise to reduce your risk of disease
  • Two, one-hour supervised exercise sessions per week
  • Full membership privileges at HealthStyles (during your enrollment in PEP)
  • Home exercise prescription
  • Two visits with a registered dietitian
  • Blood pressure, weight, and blood sugar monitoring, and client education
  • Progress reports sent to the referring physician

What are the benefits of PEP?

Studies show that regular exercise helps:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower triglycerides
  • Increase HDL – or “good” cholesterol
  • Improve insulin sensitivity and manage glucose levels
  • Improve function and activities of daily living

Why participate in regular exercise?

  • 69% of US adults are overweight
  • 35% of US adults are obese
  • Two of three adults have metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL, abnormal blood glucose levels)
  • Exercise may help you decrease dependence on medications to control high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
